One in Ten, the organization that has produced the Reel Affirmations film festival in Washington for the past 16 years, among other events, raised over $35,000 during its fourth annual Spring Gala at the Hotel Palomar, in Northwest, on Saturday, May 12. Nearly 300 people attended the event, which included a silent auction and an awards ceremony.
”I just love being able to recognize people for what they have done for us,” says Margaret Murray, executive director at One in Ten, of the award recipients, which included Metro Weekly Editor in Chief Sean Bugg and Publisher Randy Shulman, who received an original piece of artwork by local glass artist Tim Tate.
”It’s an honor to be acknowledged by an organization that has such a long and successful history in the D.C. gay community as One in Ten,” Bugg says. ”It’s even better that it comes for doing what we love, which is covering our local gay and lesbian community.”
Scott Van Hove and Dierck Casselman, past board president of One in Ten, were also awarded for their long-time support of One in Ten. One in Ten also lauded the efforts of Brother Help Thyself, an organization that aids not-for-profit organizations serving GLBT and HIV/AIDS communities in metropolitan Washington and Baltimore.
”We gave them an award for kind of being the unsung heroes of the LGBT community,” Murray says. ”They’ve recently passed the $2 million mark in giving out funds, and we thought that was an achievement that needed to be applauded.”
Murray says $650 from the money raised will be used toward the ”Plant a Seed” award, to be given out next year. This year, Carlos Portugal received the ”Plant a Seed,” which includes $4,000, for his work as an emerging filmmaker.
