BHT Announces This Year's Grant Recipients

Brother Help Thyself, a community-based organizations that helps other non-profit organizations serving the GLBT and HIV/AIDS communities in Baltimore and D.C., gave away more than $160,000 to 41 different organizations during its 30th annual Grants Award Reception at the D.C. Eagle on Saturday, Jan. 26.

This year’s grants ranged between $375 and $9,355, with the largest recipient being Helping Individual Prostitutes Survive (HIPS).

The Rainbow History Project, which works to preserve the history of metropolitan Washington’s GLBT community, was the second-highest recipient with $9,023.

BHT’s board of directors also presented awards during the ceremony. The Anthony J. Bachrach Award for outstanding volunteer work went to Ann Michaels; the Founder Award, which recognizes a nonprofit organization for its service to the community, went to the Rainbow History Project; and the George Dotson Business Award, which recognizes a business’ contribution to the GLBT community, went to the Phoenix, a gay bar in Baltimore.

”The turnout was great,” remarked Kevin B. Rost, office manager at BHT. ”We had representatives from all 41 [recipient] groups, and we had fun entertainment. It was anything but dry.”
