Finding Joy in Fairfax

Fairfax Symphony Orchestra performs Mozart and Mahler

Conventional wisdom holds that suburbanites must venture downtown for world-class entertainment. But from Olney to Alexandria, non-District denizens have repeatedly shown that artistic merit knows no boundaries. The Fairfax Symphony Orchestra is just one example.

And artistic proficiency needn’t be pretentious, as the FSO offers an evening of ”light-hearted music by Hindemith, Mozart and Mahler,” March 1, with local soprano Amanda Gosier singing pieces by the latter two composers.

”The Mozart is incredibly jubilant. It’s this fantastic, celebratory piece,” says Gosier, who has never before sung either piece publicly. ”The Mahler has a very folk motif. It creates a feeling of a beautiful, pastoral scene. It’s probably one of my favorite pieces of all time. Both pieces are a lot of fun.”

Regular fans of the FSO will also not want to miss this particular concert, as it will offer the first glimpse of the six finalists to replace outgoing Music Director William Hudson.

The Fairfax Symphony Orchestra presents Masterworks 4 Saturday, March 1, at 8 p.m., preceded by a free, pre-concert lecture at 7 p.m. Both at George Mason University’s Center for the Arts, 4400 University Drive in Fairfax. Tickets are $25 to $55 — $15 for GMW students — via www.fairfaxsymphony.org or by calling 888-945-2648.
