Madonna vs. Malawi: Singer calls for gay couple’s imprisonment to be challenged

”As a matter of principle, I believe in equal rights for all people, no matter what their gender, race, color, religion, or sexual orientation. Today, Malawi took a giant step backward. The world is filled with pain and suffering; therefore, we must support our basic human right to love and be loved. I call upon the progressive men and women of Malawi, and around the world, to challenge this decision in the name of human dignity and equal rights for all.”

Madonna expressing ”shock” and dismay at the decision by a judge in Malawi to convict and humiliate two gay men who married in a public ceremony. Tiwonge Chimbalanga and Steve Monjeza have each been sentenced to 14 years in prison. Madonna is the adoptive mother of a boy and a girl from Malawi, and she produced a documentary about that country’s challenges. [Note: Some reports are referring to Chimbalanga as being a transgender woman.] (NY Daily News)
