LGBT Leaders Unite

Equality Maryland serves as host for national community gathering

Leaders from about 60 LGBT organizations around the country will gather in Baltimore next week for the Equality Federation‘s annual Summer Meeting, as Equality Maryland serves as this year’s host.

David Toth, Equality Federation board member and Equality Maryland Foundation’s board president, describes the event as a learning experience.

”[Equality Federation has] roughly 60 member organizations and what this does is bring together those state leaders for a chance to hear about what’s happening in other states, as well as to learn from each other how to advance the [LGBT] movement from state to state.”

The 2009 gathering was held in St. Louis and organized by Promo, Missouri’s statewide LGBT equal rights organization.

”The Equality Federation liked what Equality Maryland had to offer, which is reasonable prices for hotels, good location – Baltimore is a great place to be – so we were able to offer a lot for the federation,” Toth says.

Among the topics set to discuss at the Summer Meeting are Equality Maryland’s two legislative priorities: ensuring marriage equality in the state and passing a transgender-inclusive anti-discrimination law.

The Equality Federation Summer Meeting runs Aug. 4-8 at the Baltimore Marriott Inner Harbor at Camden Yards, 110 South Eutaw St. For more information, including a full schedule of events, visit equalityfederation.org.
