Why should people get involved with the 24th annual AIDS Walk, slated to kick off from Freedom Plaza on Oct. 2?
That’s the question Whitman-Walker Clinic, AIDS Walk’s producer, is asking Washingtonians to answer in the form of a 30-second video.
”The idea for a video contest came from the effort we’re trying to make this year to increase community involvement in the AIDS Walk,” says clinic spokesperson Chip Lewis.
”We want to make this year’s event feel like a genuine community event because it really is an event for the entire community. It benefits [WWC] and it’s produced by [WWC], but it’s really an event that shows the entire D.C. metro community coming together to fight the HIV/AIDS epidemic.”
Organizers of the annual AIDS Walk, which raised about $890,000 last year, unveiled plans for a video contest after announcing a new community partners program that seeks to involve other HIV/AIDS organizations in producing the event. In return those organizations would keep half the money they raise. This year the goal is to raise $1 million.
The clinic will accept video entries through Sept. 3, and will announce a winner by Sept. 13. The winner of the video contest will receive a $100 gift card and the video will be used as a commercial to promote AIDS Walk.
Lewis says there’s no age restriction on participants in an effort to encourage young people to participate.
”We thought particularly young people these days are so tech savvy with smart phones, they’re photographing or recording everything they do, here’s an opportunity to really show their creativity and what they think is a good message to get people involved in AIDS Walk this year.”
