Of Golf and Gays: LPGA settles transgender lawsuit; Trump compares gay marriage to ugly putters

”The Ladies Professional Golf Association (“LPGA”) expresses its appreciation to Lana Lawless for raising the issue of transgender participation in its tournaments and other professional activities. Both Ms. Lawless and the LPGA are pleased that the litigation initiated by Ms. Lawless has been resolved in a satisfactory way, and applaud the LPGA members who voted overwhelmingly to remove the ‘female at birth’ provision from its by-laws.”

Statement released from the Ladies Pro Golf Association yesterday regarding a lawsuit from Lana Lawless. She is a post-op trangender woman who had challenged the LPGA’s requirement that players be “female at birth.” (PRWeb)

The NY Times reports that the Long Drivers of America changed its rules to exclude transgender players after Lawless won a contest in 2008. After she filed her lawsuit, Long Drivers and the LPGA dropped their “female at birth” requirements. (NYTimes)

In an unrelated story, the Republican presidential maybe-candidate Donald Trump continued to put down gay marriage rights with a inexpilcable golf analogy (NYTimes):

“A lot of people — I don’t want this to sound trivial — but a lot of people are switching to these really long putters, very unattractive… It’s weird. You see these great players with these really long putters, because they can’t sink three-footers anymore. And, I hate it. I am a traditionalist. I have so many fabulous friends who happen to be gay, but I am a traditionalist.”
