At age 21, Mondo is looking toward a career in journalism and politics

Mondo spent the last couple of months in Washington as a media intern. He’s about to embark on his senior year at Grinnell College in Iowa, where he’s studying Spanish and Latin American studies. After school, the 21-year-old Colorado Springs, Colo., native wants to develop a career involving journalism and politics. During his free time, Mondo likes to watch movies and read. As for D.C.’s gay nightlife scene, Mondo enjoys Nellie’s Sports Bar the most.

What’s on your nightstand?
A framed photo of Helen Thomas, a trashy Virginia Woolf novel and a cheeseburger.

What’s in your nightstand drawer?
Napkins, ketchup and usually breath mints.

Where do you keep the condoms and lube?
Where I need them.

What are your television favorites?
30 Rock. I relate a lot to Liz Lemon.

What was your favorite cartoon when you were a kid?
The Fairly OddParents. I think it would be really fun to have funny fairy godparents that help you out with your life.

What superhero would you be?
Aquaman, because I really love swimming and the idea of talking to sea creatures.

Who’s your greatest influence?
My parents. They really helped keep me down to earth and modest.

What’s your greatest fear?
Being hit by a BMW walking across Connecticut Avenue.

Pick three people, living or dead, who you think would make the most fascinating dinner guests imaginable.
Gore Vidal, Ann Coulter and Queen Latifah.

What would you serve?
Franzia, the really cheap box wine, grilled mushrooms and popcorn.

How would you describe your dream guy?
Someone that’s smart, has a really good sense of humor and is interested in the world outside of his career or job.

What about physical attributes?
Someone that’s either two or three inches shorter than me, or someone who is taller, that’s in good shape. Someone that’s pretty built. A nice smile and good hair.

Define good in bed.
Someone that’s considerate and communicates well what they like and don’t like.

Who should star in a movie about your life?
Gael García Bernal or Mark Ruffalo.

Who was your first celebrity crush?
Mel Gibson. Before he was crazy.

Who gets on your nerves?
Overly arrogant or insecure people.


If your home was burning, what’s the first thing you’d grab while leaving?
My laptop, just because it has all my pictures and memories on it.

What’s your biggest turn-on?
Someone that can make me laugh, but also has nice arms.

What’s your biggest turn-off?
Bad breath.

What’s something you’ve always wanted to do but haven’t yet tried?
Go rafting in the Potomac.

What’s something you’ve tried that you never want to do again?
Make a Mark Foley joke at Nellie’s.

Boxers.

I’ve only had sex in a bedroom.

I don’t really know. I haven’t played baseball since middle school.

I’m pretty good at both.

H&M or thrift stores, because you can always find good deals there.

$20.

I can find designer shoes at a thrift store for about $30, so $30.

What’s your favorite food to splurge with?
Seafood.

Winter. I like layering and getting all warm.

What kind of animal would you be?
A lemur, because they’re full of energy.

What kind of car would you be?
A 1970s Ford Falcon. It’s got a sleek, cool exterior.

What are you most grateful for?
To have a lot of supportive people in my life.

Freedom.
