Swimming from the sharks

In the one man show, Be Careful! The Sharks Will Eat You!, Jorge “Jay” Alvarez recounts his family’s escape from Fidel Castro’s Cuba in 1964. Gay writer and actor Alvarez impersonates a remarkable range of characters, from his stubborn abuela to an American ship-captain to his ever-persevering father Humberto. The show has toured the country, winning accolades at both New York’s and Hollywood’s fringe festivals. After the limited MetroStage run, Alvarez will work with Grammy-winning jazz musician Paquito D’Rivera to compose a score for a full-length Broadway version of the show. To April 22. MetroStage, 1201 North Royal St., Alexandria. Tickets are $40. Call 800-494-8497 or visit metrostage.org.
