Queering Sound is tonight

2008 05 29 feature story 3488 4147

J.S. Adams helped start Queering Sound a dozen years ago in part as a response to the consumerist bent of mainstream gay culture, as well as to push against stereotypes of queer music as just dance or folk. The non-curatorial event, presented by D.C.’s experimental music promoter Sonic Circuits, has expanded to include not just music but spoken word and digital art, and not just LGBT musical artists but also allies and “post-gender-identified participants.” Queering Sound 2012 features the return of several regulars, including Bev Stanton’s electronic project Arthur Loves Plastic, Blowoff’s visual guru Nick Lopata, spoken-word artist Dan Vera and Adams own full band BLK w/BEAR, whose recordings has been used in programming on BBC and the Discovery Channel. Also on tap: The first performance in 13 years of local “microsound” electronic artist Richard Chartier’s side project Pinkcourtesyphone. This year’s theme is “Red Rag + Pink Flag,” open to artistic interpretation. Tonight, Saturday, June 2, at 7:30 p.m. Sprenger Theatre in the Atlas Performing Arts Center, 1333 H St. NE. Tickets are $15. Call 202-399-7993 or visit atlasarts.org or queeringsound12.adams-dress.com.
