Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 are ready for launch

Save the date, folks, as Microsoft has finally announced the official release of its upcoming Windows Phone 8 mobile OS. Invitations have been distributed to the press for an event in San Francisco on Monday, October 29. After repeated speculation and rumor, a final concrete date for the much-hyped OS is a relief to those looking desperate to try out the latest from the team in Redmond. Microsoft has been careful to only allow brief, restricted access to Windows Phone 8 as they curate it towards launch, and has promised a number of surprises and new additions are waiting to be unveiled. Whatever it is Microsoft has up their sleeve, it faces stiff competition from Google’s recent Jelly Bean update, and Apple’s iOS6, but with a refresh of the smooth Live Tile interface and more powerful innards for the phones that run it, it’s sure to satisfy devoted fans — though whether it can convert Android and iOS diehards remains to be seen. Whatever happens, we’ll be bringing you the news October 29.

Microsoft had already announced the launch of the long-teased Windows 8, the latest update to its juggernaut PC operating system, but the distribution of official invitations makes it that much more tangible. There’s few surprises left in store, and we can expect everything available in the current RTM build to be present and correct, but hopefully Microsoft will have plenty of hardware on show — including its gorgeous Surface tablet — to give the Metro-centric UI room to shine. Keep it locked to Technocrat for the official announcement, October 25.
