Virginia organizations join “Red State Brief” asking Supreme Court to overturn DOMA, Prop. 8

Cuccinelli.png“It is through this brief these citizens can speak so that the anti-equality opinions of the current state administration, as represented by Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, do not constitute the only Virginia voice speaking to the Supreme Court.”

— Robin Gorsline, president of People of Faith for Equality in Virginia, which joined LGBT rights organization Equality Virginia and others across the nation in filing the so-called “Red-State Brief.” The brief calls on the Supreme Court to uphold appellate court rulings finding both DOMA and Proposition 8 unconstitutional, and argues that state laws in conservative states have been used to deny LGBT citizens civil rights, thereby necessitating a federal ruling to ensure equal treatment under the law.
