“Same Love,” LGBT themes at GALA’s Flamenco Festival

Screen Shot 2013-11-08 at 11.38.54 AM.pngGALA Theatre’s flamenco festival kicks off its ninth year this weekend with a premiere piece by gay choreographers Edwin Aparicio (pictured, right) and Aleksey Kulikov, who were legally married last June. One Plus One explores the themes of individuality and collaboration inherent in the pair’s relationship. Aparicio, who is the co-founder and artistic director of GALA’s Fuego Flamenco, presents the piece through his namesake company Flamenco Aparicio Dance Company. Aparicio will dance alongside Norberto Chamizo, Genevieve Guinn and Anna Menendez, and the performance includes singers Amparo Heredia and Hector Marquez, guitarist Richard Marlow and percussionist Behzad Habibazi. It also includes the couple’s new choreography to the hit gay-affirmative pop song “Same Love” by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis.

Friday, Nov. 8, and Saturday, Nov. 9, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 10, at 2 p.m. Fuego Flamenco IX runs to Nov. 17. GALA Theatre, 3333 14th St. NW. Tickets are $35, or $60 for a discounted festival ticket. Call 202-234-7174 or visit galatheatre.org.
