New poll shows same-sex marriage support at record high

“In a Post-ABC poll in March 2004, 38 percent said same-sex marriage should be legal, while 59 percent said it should not, the same percentage now in favor of allowing gays to marry.”

The Washignton Post, reporting on a poll conducted with ABC News which has found that 59% of Americans support the right of same-sex couples to marry. Of those polled:

  • half said that “gay men and lesbians have a constitutional right to marry”
  • 53% of those living in states with same-sex marriage bans supported the right to marry
  • almost 70% agreed that businesses should not be allowed to discriminate against LGBT people.
