By the summer of 2007, the Barbadian singer already had three major hits under her belt: “SOS,” “Pon de Replay” and “Unfaithful.” “Umbrella,” and its parent albumGood Girl Gone Bad, ruled the airwaves during the summer of 2007. “Umbrella” enjoyed a seven-week run at the top — and she was just getting started. Mm-hmm, who doesn’t remember hearing this album all summer long that year?


2008

Katy Perry “I Kissed a Girl”

No. 1: July 5 through Aug. 16

“I Kissed a Girl” launched a string of smash hits for Katy Perry that shows no sign of slowing. The song dominated the summer of 2008, spending seven weeks at No. 1. In the six years since “I Kissed a Girl,” Perry has enjoyed a remarkable 14 “Top 10” hits, and nine No. 1 smashes.


2009

Black Eyed Peas “I Gotta Feeling”

There is no arguing that 2009 is the year of the Black Eyed Peas. The hip-hop/pop hybrid spent 26 straight weeks at No. 1, first with “Boom Boom Pow” starting in April, and then with their anthemic “I Gotta Feeling,” which stayed at number one all the way into October. Their album The E.N.D. ended up launching six singles, and selling many millions of copies worldwide.

Eminem feat. Rihanna “Love the Way You Lie”

No. 1: July 31 through Sept. 11

Most of the hits of summer tend to be fun-loving dance/pop numbers, but in 2010 the airwaves were ruled by this harrowing collaboration between Eminem and Rihanna. “Love the Way You Lie” became Eminem’s biggest hit in years, spending seven weeks at the top, wedged between duel chart-toppers by Katy Perry: “California Gurls” and “Teenage Dream.”
