The Number 1 Hits of Summer, 1994 to 2014

2011

Adele “Rolling in the Deep”

18-Adele-Rolling_In_The_DeepNo. 1: May 21 through July 2

British songstress Adele scored a surprise smash with her brilliantly executed bit of score-settling, “Rolling in the Deep.” Her smash single spent seven weeks at No. 1 in the United States, and was a worldwide phenomenon, setting the stage for an awards sweep for her album 21. She was last heard taking a stunning turn at the best James Bond theme in years, the opulent “Skyfall.” We’re eager to hear something new.

2012

19-call-me-maybe-1760857369

Carly Rae Jepsen “Call Me Maybe”

No. 1: June 23 through Aug. 18

Some of these tracks may qualify as “guilty pleasures” in the years to come — or simply “guilty.” Whatever your feeling about this chirpy nugget of dance/pop, it was everywhere the summer of 2012. “Call Me Maybe” was a cultural phenomenon, and spent nine long (very, very long) weeks at No. 1.

2013

20-Robin-Thicke

Robin Thicke feat. T.I. and Pharrell “Blurred Lines”

No. 1: June 22 through Sept. 7

Yes, “Get Lucky” is by far the better song. Yes, there is a certain undeniable inspiration by Marvin Gaye’s classic (and superior) “Got to Give it Up.” But “Blurred Lines” ruled the summer of 2013. It was inescapable, and spent 12 weeks at No. 1. And hey, it’s an undeniably fun song.

2014 (so far)

Iggy Azalea feat. Charli XCX “Fancy”

No. 1: June 7 through July 12

So far, this year’s hands down summer hit is Iggy Azalea and her quirky and funky track “Fancy,” just the type of song that people will remember years from now.
