Inspired by the true story of Rabbi Menachem Youlus, the self-dubbed "Jewish Indiana Jones," "G-d's Honest Truth" humorously explores how the Jewish community deals with scandal. Roberta and Larry always try to do the right thing -- but just how far are they willing to go? When they have the opportunity to help rescue a Holocaust Torah, they know they have to bring it to Temple Beth David. But that task proves to be no cakewalk. From the Helen Hayes Award-winning playwright and recent recipient of the 2014 Jewish Plays Project Award, "G-d's Honest Truth" gets its world premiere from D.C.'s Theater J. [less-]

It's the hottest summer in human history and, in just a few short months, all water on earth will evaporate -- and humankind with it. In response, twenty-something Charlie has taken to her couch with her beloved possessions: peanut butter, Wolf Blitzer and Herschel, her pet fish. Her mother, roommate and sometimes-boyfriend all attempt to persuade her to leave the apartment and enjoy life. But as Charlie's memories take over, more complicated reasons for her self-inflicted hibernation emerge, as she confronts her deferred dreams and considers the possibility of life and love just outside her door. Filled with playwright Nick Blaemire's ("Glory Days") trademark quirky, witty style, "Soon"'s youthful humor delivers a searing and sardonic commentary on what to do with the time you have left. It was named Outstanding Play for its workshop at the New York Fringe, and now it's having its world premiere in Washington, D.C. Athol Fugard's Tony-nominated drama "The Island" depicts the psychological and physical condition of black political prisoners in South Africa at the height of apartheid. The moving production follows two men who are confined to a location based on the notorious Robben Island prison. There, they spend their days doing back-breaking labor, and their nights rehearsing Sophocles' "Antigone" to present to their fellow inmates. When one man learns his sentence is being reduced, their friendship is tested. Considered to be one of the most significant plays of the twentieth century, "The Island" is based on the true story of Norman Ntshinga, a black actor in South Africa who was arrested on suspicion of being a member of the then-banned African National Congress and sentenced to 10 years. The play, staged at Alexandria's MetroStage, is as powerful and relevant today as it was when devised with two actors in 1973. Doug Brown returns to reprise his role of Winston, while Michael Anthony Williams plays fellow prisoner, John. [less-]

At the National Geographic Museum, you can explore the earth and all that's in and around it, past and present. "Monster Fish: In Search of the Last River Giants " dives beneath the waters to reveal the rare giant fish that live hidden below. Join Zeb Hogan, National Geographic explorer and host of the Nat Geo WILD series, "Monster Fish", on a journey to find and protect the world's largest freshwater fish. Meet more than a dozen of these behemoth creatures from river basins all over the world. Five life-size sculptures as long as 20 feet in length show off their amazing size, including a climbable sawfish. You can also see real fish in a gallery of aquariums containing live fish, including juvenile alligator gar. Test your survival skills in the obstacle course game "Monster Size Me", and help Hogan complete a series of scientific missions in the touchtable game "A Monster Mission". Very young visitors can go fishing with magnet poles along a stylized riverbank and carefully release their catches back into the river through clear chutes while older visitors take the "Fishin' Decision" digital challenge to see how many fish species they can quickly decide to keep or release. After that, go even bigger and experience the Cretaceous Period's "Spinosaurus", the largest predatory dinosaur to ever roam the planet -- at over 50 feet long, 20 feet high and 6 tons, it made "T. rex" look like small potatoes. Whether you live in the area or are visiting D.C. from afar, the National Geographic Museum offers permanent and rotating exhibits that'll keep you riveted. Centrally located downtown, the museum is just a few blocks from the White House and an easy walk from many of the national monuments. [less-]

Prepare to be scared out of your wits. Loosely based on the true story of The Philip Experiment in 1970s Toronto, David Skeele's "The Margins" tracks five paranormal investigators and one skeptical reporter as they visit a haunted manor. The team sets out to create and raise a spirit as a psychic experiment, one which ultimately spirals horribly out of control. Henley's world-premiere slapstick comedy "Laugh", on stage at D.C.'s Studio Theatre, presents a Hollywood-caliber homage to '20s silent films with live piano accompaniment, mishaps, moxie and even an exploding goldmine. The title characters of "The Norwegians" are really, really nice ... for hit men. Not quite as nice are Olive and Betty, the two women who've hired them to bump off their ex-boyfriends. As the two women sit inside a Minnesota bar, commiserating about the difficulties of finding lovers and discussing hiring hit men, things start to go awry. Revenge, after all, can be just as complicated as love. This inspired dark comedy from C. Denby Swanson, writer of "The Death of a Cat" and "Atomic Farmgirl", was an off-off-Broadway hit that made audiences howl and "The New York Times" gush with praise. Now, a talented cast brings "The Norwegians" to new life on the stage of the Anacostia Playhouse. [less-]
