In 1949, Pulitzer Prize winner James Agee penned a tragicomic screenplay involving Charlie Chaplin's "Tramp" character. In it, the beloved bumbling vagrant muddles through a crumbling world after the disastrous events of a super-atomic blast. Alas, the screenplay was never produced and, in fact, remained "lost" for many years. Writer-performer Rob Jansen's one-man show "The Tramp's New World" brings that untold story to the stage for the first time. This new multidisciplinary theatrical work combines physical comedy, music, cinema and silent film technique to help flesh out Agee's original vision. Jansen's take on the unearthed gem comes to life at D.C.'s Mead Theatre Lab. [less-]

Let's take this suitor out for a test drive! After a disastrous first marriage, the wealthy Maria swears to never marry again without a trial period, taking a would-be groom ""On Approval"" before committing. Sharp wit, bad manners and funny dialogue drive this wicked comedy from British playwright Frederick Lonsdale, which wraps up the Washington Stage Guild's Season of Love and/or Marriage. Maria takes Richard to Scotland to test his husband potential, and the impoverished Duke of Bristol tags along. When Maria's friend Helen also secretly follows hoping to win the Duke, the four find themselves stuck together to hilariously dissect their wants, needs and true desires. Lonsdale's 1926 comedy ran on Broadway and London's West End, and was one his most popular hits. [less-]

The literal call in "The Call" is a phone message from an adoption agency to prospective parents Annie and Peter: A child needs a home. But the metaphorical calls of this moving drama are many -- including the desire for a kind of idealized parenthood, and beyond it, the urgent invitation to respond to hard realities. For Annie and Peter, a white couple, have decided to adopt a child from Africa. The ethics and implications of their decision are explored brilliantly in this acutely funny and tack-sharp drama from Tanya Barfield, one of the nation's most promising young playwrights. A startling portrait of cultural divisions, Theater J's new production of "The Call" now summons audiences to Atlas Performing Arts Center. [less-]

Experience Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Carousel", which "Time" magazine called the greatest musical of the 20th century, at the Olney Theatre Center. Swaggering, carefree carnival barker Billy Bigelow captivates and marries naive millworker Julie. Losing his job just as he learns that Julie is pregnant, Billy, desperate to provide a decent life for his family, is coerced into taking part in a bank robbery. Caught in the act and facing prison, he takes his own life and is sent "up there." Returning to Earth for just one day -- 15 years later -- Billy encounters the daughter he never knew. A lonely, friendless teenager, her father's reputation as a thief and a bully has haunted her throughout her young life. How Billy instills in both the child and her mother a sense of hope and dignity is a dramatic testimony to the power of love. It's easy to understand why, of all the shows they created, "Carousel" was Rodgers and Hammerstein's personal favorite. [less-]

Quacking like a duck, crawling on all fours, bouncing on an exercise ball while humming the theme from "The Land Before Time" -- adults have been known to go to ridiculous extremes to soothe a crying baby. But in the long and high-strung history of baby pacification, no one has gone out on a farther limb than Jerry in "A Tale of Two Cities". A drag queen getting ready for a big gig, Jerry discovers an abandoned baby bawling on his front step. It's 1931 in the Soviet Union and things are not what they seem. In the critically acclaimed play "The Letters", a ministry director calls his employee, Anna, into his office for a job-related interview. But the director seems to have some sort of hidden agenda. Is he offering Anna a promotion? Is he making a sexual advance upon her? Or is Anna in fact harboring a hidden agenda of her own? A deftly structured cat-and-mouse thriller, "The Letters", written by John W. Lowell, is based on the real-life story of the Soviets struggling to edit the sexually explicit letters of Tchaikovsky. "The Huffington Post" hailed the play, now coming to Alexandria's MetroStage starring Susan Lynskey and Michael Russotto, as "a pitch perfect ... masterful tale, masterfully told." [less-]

In this modern masterwork of moral ambiguity that's been praised as a unique mix of Oscar Wilde and Bertolt Brecht, the great Irish writer George Bernard Shaw pits a military industrialist against his crusading daughter, from whom he's been estranged for years. She's a Salvation Army major; he's an arms manufacturer and whiskey distiller -- on certain issues, they could not disagree more. But when he begins donating money to her organization, matters come to a head as the characters grapple with questions of work, faith, family and philanthropy. The play first premiered in 1905 and opened on Broadway in 1915, and now Pallas Theatre Collective brings its new production of "Major Barbara" to the Anacostia Arts Center. [less-]
