This all-new kid-friendly take on "The Three Musketeers" is all about the power of teamwork to overcome obstacles and save the day, with a little adventure thrown in for good measure. The romantic legend of Dorothy Vernon, the daughter of a wealthy British landowner, who scandalized society by eloping with her true love instead of submitting to an arranged marriage, comes to the stage courtesy of the Victorian Lyric Opera Company. Still a major British tourist attraction today, the English country house known as Haddon Hall provides the proper setting for this 19th-century social satire, written by composer Arthur Sullivan shortly after his famed 1889 breakup with librettist W.S. Gilbert. A talented cast of more than 30 is set to appear in this new production at Rockville's F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre. The company will also host a community outreach matinee, featuring a craft activity for kids, backstage tours and more. [less-]

Skype-like videophones and scuba gear make a prescient appearance in George Bernard Shaw's ambitious five-part 1922 play cycle, "Back to Methuselah", one of the very first works of science fiction-fantasy ever to appear in a theater. The Washington Stage Guild is in the middle of its vast undertaking to produce these rarely-seen plays by the Nobel Prize-winning satirist ("Pygmalion, Major Barbara, Saint Joan"), which started with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden and posit a future in the year 31,920 in which mankind has evolved towards immortality. Now, with "The Thing Happens", we're a mere 250 years in the future, where a few have found success in extending their natural lifespan. But this zany comedy finds some growing pains still exist, especially in terms of romance and relationships. That's followed by "Tragedy of an Elderly Gentlemen", a fantasy set in A.D. 3000, where short-lived people and those who are centuries old face some monumental choices. Experience the wit and wisdom of Shaw's glimpse into the future at D.C.'s Undercroft Theatre. [less-]

Like seeing Tim Burton's nightmares come to life, Pointless Theatre's production of "Doctor Caligari" brings one of the first horror films to the stage in a visually stunning adaptation. "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari", with its distorted, Gothic visual design and creepy carnival plot, was one of the key films of the German Expressionist movement in silent cinema. Pointless Theatre draws on its unique puppetry style, using life-size puppets operated by masked puppeteers, plus stylized set design and a live string trio to capture the distinctive look and feel of the original. Journey into madness as "Doctor Caligari" takes over Washington, D.C.'s Mead Theatre Lab. [less-]
