“A lot of us knew we were Republican before we knew we were gay, so this is home for us.”

The California GOP voted 861-293 at the party’s biannual convention in Sacramento on Sunday to recognize the state’s chapter of Log Cabin Republicans, according to The Los Angeles Times.

Log Cabin Republicans was founded in California in 1977 to oppose the Briggs Initiative, which attempted to bar gay people from teaching in the state’s public schools. Despite the formal recognition, the California Republican Party’s official platform still opposes much of what the Log Cabin Republicans stand for.

“We believe public policy and education should not be exploited to present or teach homosexuality as an acceptable ‘alternative’ lifestyle. We oppose same-sex partner benefits, child custody, and adoption,” the platform states.
