There are a number of low-cost commuter trains available in the DC-Baltimore area. To the right is an overview map of the major lines. [Fare quotes are from August 2007.] In Baltimore there is a MTA Subway that runs from Owings Mills Mall in Baltimore County southeast into the city to Mondawmin Mall, and finally into downtown Baltimore at Charles Center and Hopkins Hospital. Hours: Monday-Friday, 5am-12 midnight; Saturday-Sunday, 6am-12 midnight. Basic One-way Fare: $1.60. Also in Baltimore, an above ground Light Rail train runs from Hunt Valley in Baltimore County directly south through the inner city to the downtown area by the Orioles Camden Yard stadium, and finally further south to BWI airport. Hours: Monday-Saturday, 6am-11pm; Sunday, 11am-7pm. Basic One-way Fare: $1.60. Maryland offers a MARC commuter train that uses the Amtrak rails, but separate trains with a separate schedule and ticket system. There are 3 major branches of the MARC system and they all end at Union Station in Washington, DC. The Brunswick Line goes all the way out to Martinsburg, WV or Frederick, MD. The Camden Line goes to downtown Baltimore's Camden Yards Stadium. And the Penn Line takes an alternate route through BWI Airport and Baltimore's Penn Station, but continues all the way out to Perryville, MD. Hours: varies by location, but geared toward 7am-5pm workers; Do not miss the last train! One-Way Fare from Frederick or Baltimore to DC: $7.00. Washington, DC has an excellent subway system called "Metro," and is seen all around the city as brown pillars marked with a capital "M." 5 color-coded lines with easy transfer staions will take you to to all sides of the District and the surrounding Maryland and Virginia area including National Airport. Hours: Sunday, 7am-12midnight; Monday-Thursday, 5am-12midnight, Friday, 5am-3am; Saturday, 7am-3am. Basic One-way Fare: $1.35 Finally, the Virginia Railway Express, has 2 branches that run from Manassas in the west, to Fredericksburg in the south, to Downtown DC's Union Station. Hours: Vary, but generally 5am-7pm. One-way Fares: Most less than $8. There is no train that goes to Dulles Airport but a Metro train line is being negotiated. |
