"An Octoroon" is Branden Jacobs-Jenkins' Obie-winning raucously irreverent riff (think "Gone With the Wind" meets "Looney Tunes") on a 19th-century antebellum melodrama. At a plantation on the brink of foreclosure, a young man takes a fancy to the mixed race daughter of the estate's owner, while an evil swindler schemes to buy the girl for himself, while the slaves try to keep things sane. Billed as "part period satire, part meta-theatrical middle finger," this incendiary adaptation by Jacobs-Jenkins, a recent MacArthur "Genius Grant" winner, was lauded by the "The New York Times" as "... this decade's most eloquent theatrical statement on race in America today." Don't miss "An Octoroon" when it comes to Portland's Artists Repertory Theatre. [less-]

What if there was a happy pill that could take away all the stresses and strains of life? That's the premise of Kate Fodor's "Rx". Deftly balancing sardonic shots at Big Pharma with a tender love story between a clinical researcher and a patient taking part in a drug trial, "The New York Times" hailed "Rx" as "a winning combination of light satire and romance." A romantic comedy for our overprescribed culture, "Rx" shows that the greatest antidepressant doesn't come in pill form. Enjoy this modern comedy at Portland's Twilight Theater Company. [less-]

"Tigers Be Still" -- a ferociously funny play from "New Girl" writer Kim Rosenstock -- centers around Sherry Wickman, who's recently earned a degree in art therapy, only to find herself moving back in with her family. A big hit on Broadway with both audiences and critics, "Hand to God" revolves around the young students of a Texas Christian Puppet Ministry, who've been taught to obey the Bible in order to avoid "Satan's hand." But things take a darkly comic turn when the puppet of one devout young man begins to exhibit some shocking personality traits. The demented alter ego, Tyrone, soon teaches those around him that idle hands truly are the devil's playthings. Hailed by "The New York Times" as a "foul-mouthed, fun-packed play about the urges that drive good men (and women, and boys) to dirty deeds," this hilariously twisted comedy -- nominated for five Tony Awards in 2015 -- takes over the Sanctuary at Sandy Plaza for triangle productions' west-coast premiere. The Light Opera of Portland presents "The Gondoliers", Gilbert and Sullivan's 12th comic opera collaboration, which was written after a falling-out between the pair. The joy of their reconciliation comes through in their beautiful music and deftly turned phrases. "Gondoliers" is a hilarious parody of the class distinctions that existed in England in the late 1800s, showing how expressions of unity and acknowledgements of equality promote peace and contentment. Amusing confusion reigns as two charming Venetian gondoliers, Giuseppe and Marco, are informed that, due to an error of identity when they were young boys, one of them is the heir to the throne of the (fictional) kingdom of Barataria. They agree to rule the country jointly until the rightful heir is discovered. Fun ensues as the truth becomes known. To add to the confusion, Gilbert and Sullivan toss in a dose of love and mistaken identity, as is their custom. This Light Opera of Portland production comes to the stage at the Alpenrose Dairy Opera House. [less-]
