Four albums later, Girl in a Coma continues to attract new listeners and accolades. NPR has raved about Diaz's ''scary-good'' voice and praised the band's Exits and All The Rest as one of 2011's best. Last month, the album, which features ranchera-glazed ballads as well as blistering punk tunes, won as Best Indie/Alt Rock Album at the Independent Music Awards.
Diaz hopes to someday actually work with Morrissey, as well as play Coachella. ''I'd like to have a chance to work with more people and experience music in all sorts of levels,'' she says.
Girl in a Coma performs Friday, July 13, at 8 p.m., at Red Palace, 1212 H St. NE. Tickets are $10 in advance. Call 202-399-3201 or visit redpalacedc.com.
