DIRECTED BY Sara Millman, Robin's Hood rescues ye olde English tale from the wooden posturings of Kevin Costner and gives it new life as an urban lesbian outlaw story. Social worker/urban warrior Robin (played by co-screenwriter Khatee V. Turner) finds it hard to help out her clients from the old neighborhood and remain on the leeward side of her supervisor's bureaucratic, unrealistic, and unforgiving adherence to rules.

Fortunately, she runs into Brooklyn (Cody Cates), a second-generation thief with a heart of gold who goes out of her way to seduce Robin. An intense relationship lights between the two, and only gets more dramatic as Robin joins Brooklyn's bankrobbing sideline in order to provide some real cash assistance to the neighborhood.

Both Turner and Cates have a lot of fun playing up their characters, with the former keeping Robin's steely fem sensuality pitched at a low throaty hum. Cates takes swaggeringly skinny butchiness to new heights with her provocative French accent. Backed by a varied, alive-and-kicking soundtrack, and the real-life street corners of Oakland, Robin's Hood manages to take gritty urban reality in hand and fudge it with a bit of mythical heroism.
