Annual bake sale raises $12,000

The Scarlet Foundation raised approximately $12,000 during its 37th Annual Bake Sale and Auction, on Saturday, Feb. 9, at the DC Eagle.

''There was great attendance from the community,'' says Patrick Grady, who serves on the board of the Scarlet Foundation. ''We raised some good money.''

The item that brought in the most money was a ribbon-shaped cake in honor of Cornelius ''Neil'' R. Alexander Jr. Alexander, who died last November, was the chief hearing examiner of the D.C. Commission on Human Rights, and who had organized the bake sale in year's past. Made by Tim Woody, the memorial cake was auctioned off for $500.

Other noteworthy entries included Food & Friends' cake, which was awarded ''best commercial cake,'' and the Centaurs MC cake, which won ''best club cake'' honors. The Scarlet Foundation awarded The Leather Rack's Jim McGlade its Scarlet Foundation Award for his longtime support of the organization and the GLBT community.

In 2007, the bake sale raised $20,154.

Grady says that while this year's attendance was ''great,'' the event raised somewhat less than in year's past because a major leather-weekend event in Houston drew some of the event's usual participants.
