A coalition of Virginia gay and lesbian groups will sponsor a rally to defeat the proposed state constitutional amendment that would ban same-sex marriage and other partnerships.
The rally, sponsored by Equality Prince William and the Commonwealth Coalition, will be held this Saturday, Aug. 5, at noon at the Bull Run Unitarian Universalists Sanctuary, 9350 Main St., Manassas, Va. Bull Run is also a co-sponsor of the rally.
''We're hoping for 150,'' says Brian Pace, president of Equality Prince William. There has been some buzz on conservative blogs about a counter-protest to the rally, but Pace says there's no confirmation that such a protest would occur in front of the church.
Speakers and guests include Occoquan, Va., Mayor Earnie Porta; House of Delegates candidate Jeanette Rishell; and Rev. Nancy McDonald Ladd of Bull Run Unitarian.
A recent poll showed a majority of Virginians -- 56 percent -- supported the amendment. However, the poll only questioned respondents on the first sentence of the amendment. Commonwealth Coalition polling has shown even less support among voters when read the full text of the amendment.
''We've got a real shot here,'' says Pace. ''We're very excited about our prospects.''
