''My sister warned me she would never call me her brother unless I break up with Pan; and I have answered hundreds of phone calls from friends and relatives, who say they feel ashamed of me.... We are no longer hiding any more. The wedding is our happiest and most precious moment....Thousands of gays and lesbians get married in France, Finland, the UK. Why couldn't we?''
Zeng Anquan, 45, who married his gay male partner, Pan Wenjie, 27, spoke with China Daily about their rather bold decision to go public with their marriage and with coming out gay in what is still seen as a repressive Chinese society. Though the marriage is ceremonial only and not legally recognized by the state government, these men say they are up for a "long and arduous" journey to be "recognized as husband and wife,'' according to the publication's website.
