“The central goal of U.S. policy should be to bolster those fighting for freedom on the frontlines and to protect LGBT Russians from persecution and violence. This will take a sustained effort, but it is worth the battle.”

Innokenty Grekov, of Human Rights First, in an Aug. 29 statement announcing the release of a report he authored titled Convenient Targets. The report lists several recommendations for the Obama administration to challenge Russia’s new anti-LGBT “propaganda” law, including President Obama meeting with human-rights activists when he attends the G-20 Summit in St. Petersburg, Russia, next week; and creating a coalition with other nations beyond Western European countries to oppose the law.
