It's New Year's -- Get Out There and Celebrate!

You can ring in the New Year at any bar in town, but if you have champagne dreams, you wanna go where the party is. Unfortunately, most places only offer one free champagne toast per person, right at midnight. So you can’t barhop to get more than one free bubbly – but maybe if you bat your eyes just so, that hunky bartender with the intriguing tattoo that snakes down beyond where the eye can see will pop his cork for you. Of course, if you shell out more money, he’ll definitely explode.

But where should you go? Here’s Hearsay’s selective list. And remember, drinks will be served until 4 a.m. everywhere, so you can make the celebrating last that much longer. Burp!

At Town, Ed “The Year In Music” Bailey will spin upstairs the top tunes of 2008 and some of those to come in 2009, while the X-Faction dance troupe and the Ladies of Town will put on what they advertise as an “over the top” stage show. Plus, there’ll be a “neon-glowing explosion” at midnight.

Cobalt is offering a champagne toast along with a review of the best and most memorable music of the past 30 years.

The circus will be at Be Bar, as DJs Back2Back spin the “Three Ring Diva Circus,” a battle between Britney, Madonna and Beyonce.

Kristina “Big Girls Don’t Cry” Kelly is hosting Apex’s party, with a champagne toast, party favors and DJs Randy “I Know What You Are” White on the main floor and Michael “Spanish Lesson” Brandon in the East Wing for a Caliente Especial.

Halo will feature guest DJ Daniel “Get Your Beats Herre” Kristopherre and will give out party favors and midnight shots, plus they’ll be serving up 2-4-1 drinks all night.

Green Lantern will offer a midnight toast, hats, noisemakers and party favors, along with a review of the past year’s hottest hits and a peek at next year’s rising stars.

JR.’s will offer free champagne and a “$300 balloon drop” at midnight, followed by a countdown of comedy clips and music videos and a review of your favorite music last year.

And if you feel like starting 2009 out of town, head on up I-95 to Baltimore. Club Hippo is putting on a Hollywood-style extravaganza, with DJ Alex “Do You Wanna” Funk, live performances and “large-scale visuals” along with party favors, free bubbly, even pastry, fruit and coffee in the AM. Start the New Year eating, hon!...

D.C.'s main gay Latin party Fuego just keeps churning out the heat years after it started. Now, in addition to its weekly Friday event, there's a new monthly event every fourth Saturday at Be Bar, starting with tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 27. This longstanding party, thrown by Philip “Turn It Up” Doyle and DJ Hector “So Loud I Can See It" Zarate becomes Be: Fuego for the night, but it'll feature the usual accoutrements, including a drag show with Gigi Paris Couture and Chiqui, and all the Latin boys whipping up merengue and salsa to the beats of Hector and DJ Xtasis. How fresca! Better still, is open bar until from 10 to 11 p.m.

Cobalt's Bare to Lure the Ladies

After a forced four-month hiatus, the lady-loving Lure party has been revived.

“Everybody’s stoked, especially to bring it back to, dare I say it, the gayborhood,” says Karen “Luring Leading Lady” Diehl, about the party she throws with Melissa “The Lure Of It All” May. A popular weekly staple at the RnR Bar & Lounge in Penn Quarter for nearly a year until that club was sold without notice at the end of July, Lure has now found a home at Cobalt. The newly remodeled venerable gay institution will launch Diehl and May’s party starting tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 20, and the third Saturday of every month. It’s been reborn as Bare.

“A woman doesn’t have to be completely nude to get a woman turned on. Just bare skin will do,” says Diehl, explaining the idea behind the party’s new classy but sexy name. The Ladies of Lure plan to play up the name at future events, including the second party, which will take place – and go later than usual – the Saturday before Obama’s Inauguration. But for tomorrow night, with DJ Rosie, Diehl says they just “encourage women to come out and show some skin,” as much as they’re willing – and legally able – to bare. The party starts at 10 p.m. at Cobalt, 1639 R St. NW. Cover $5 before midnight, $8 after....

Ralphi used to, and he still does…

RalphiRosario.jpgChicago house music legend Ralphi “Bigger, Better, Harder” Rosario puts the “rosa” in Rosabel, which is Spanish for “big room sweet sound.” (Also: “cranberry-vodka with a splash of pickle juice.”) Twenty-one years ago, Rosario gave the club world the classic “You Used to Hold Me.” It never gets old. Why, if you bat your eyes demurely, and wear some of your best “sweet-smelling, seductive perfume,” he just might play it tomorrow night when he makes his debut at Town – and his first stop in D.C. in a couple years. He’s also sure to play many of his classic remixes, either produced solo or with Abel “Always Looking for Men” Aguilera – from the likes of Janet Jackson, Madonna, Kelly Clarkson and the Pussycat Dolls. “Don’t cha” remember? Hot! Start your divas, it’s about to get ugly here in a minute – Hearsay’s got a (good) feeling....
