The American Film Institute's Silver Theatre screens a new 35mm print of this 1970 film revolving around the antics of Hawkeye (Donald Sutherland) and Trapper John (Elliott Gould) as they struggle to keep their sanity amid the madness of the Korean War. The cast is a veritable who's who -- Sally Kellerman as Hot Lips O'Houlihan, Rene Auberjonios as Father Mulcahy, Robert Duvall as Frank Burns, and Tom Skerritt as Duke Forrest. Oh, yeah, and a little unknown named Gary Burghoff as Radar O'Reilly, who went on to national fame in the TV adaptation of the movie. The film is informed by Robert Altman's loose-limbed style, which he would grind to perfection in his ultimate masterpiece, Nashville. But M*A*S*H is really the movie that kicked things off for Altman in a big way. Friday, Sept. 17, at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 18, at 5:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 19, at 9:30 p.m., and Monday, Sept. 20, at 9:30 p.m. AFI Silver Theatre, 8633 Colesville Road, Silver Spring.
