"This will be a major Microsoft announcement -- you will not want to miss it." So reads the invite Microsoft is currently sending out for a press event in LA on Monday. Scheduled just days before it reveals the next major update to its Windows Phone operating system, the focus of the announcement is a mystery. However, AllThingsD has heard word from "sources outside the company" that the focus will be on tablets. Specifically, Windows RT tablets.
Windows RT is the version of Windows 8 built for ARM processors, the same type of chips that power most smartphones and tablets. Microsoft has extensively previewed Windows 8 running on traditional desktops and x86 powered tablets, but has remained fairly quiet about Windows RT, denying hands-on time to press at past events.
Monday's announcement is expected to bring with it not only previews of upcoming devices, but also further information on what applications and functions will actually be made available in the Windows RT build. It's still speculation, but given its close proximity to Apple's recent spate of WWDC announcements, it's the perfect time for Microsoft to steal back the limelight for its products. We'll be bringing you the full scoop on Monday.
