The rumors swirling around the Apple cart are that the company is planning to launch an iPad "Mini" by year's end, according to reports by both The Wall Street Journal's Marketwatch and Bloomberg. The smaller iPad will boast a screen of either 7 to 8 inches, according to Bloomberg, and is aimed at competing directly with Google's Nexus 7 tablet, which has created a firestorm of buzz since its announcement last week.
Oddly, the smaller iPad is unlikely to have a Retina Display to keep its price competitive with the 7-inch Nexus, which is currently selling at $199. Microsoft is also jumping into the tablet fray this fall with its recently announced Windows-powered Surface, featuring a 10.6-inch display. Microsoft has yet to announce pricing.
For years, Apple has been dismissing the need for a smaller iPad. The question is, has Google finally forced their hand? Or was this in the works all along?
