After months of teasing and speculation, Microsoft has finally come clean and given Windows 8 an official launch date. At the company's annual sales meeting, Steven Sinofsky told attendees that, whether in upgrade format or on a new system, Windows 8 will be made available October 26. Not only is this a Friday, giving prospective purchasers -- of which we can be sure there will be many -- an entire weekend to play with the new OS, it also gives a clue as to when we can expect Microsoft's Surface tablet to drop. The tablet was given a vague fall release schedule at it's unveiling in June, with the intention being to deliver it alongside Windows 8. With a concrete release date for the latter, Surface's street launch can't be far behind.
