Travel:When I told friends I was going to be visiting Curaçao for a few days, it never failed that I received one of two responses.Among the small number familiar with Curaçao, there was immediate excitement and expressions of congratulations, followed by a long list of ''must see'' recommendations. And, in a few cases, there was a discernable spot of envy.On the flip side, most people responded with, ''Where is that?'' ...

Travel:So you're about to embark on an amazing international vacation, with all your plans set – except for that extended layover in Paris, which is not at all uncommon if you're flying Air France or Delta. Afraid you'll be spending all those hours in the airport? (Photo by Domen Colja)Fear no more. Here's how to make the most of your brief time in the ''City of Lights.''For a four-hour layover, spend some time at a local café where the casual atmosphere has guests seated facing toward the street, providing a great view of the European lifestyle while enjoying a small meal or cup of coffee. Café de Flore would be a great choice. Though there are cafes strung throughout the city, this somewhat pricey restaurant gives tourists exactly what they've seen from any movie or picture in America. Enjoy the meat or cheese platters over a drink and by the time you get the check, you will begin to feel the heartbeat of Paris. ... Travel:Having to be away from your home on your birthday is hard enough. Having it happen when you are getting ready to turn 40 is really rough. Luckily for me, however, some work took me to one of the best cities in the United States to simply let loose and enjoy: West Hollywood, Calif. West Hollywood (Photo by Eric Wood)While ''WeHo'' was once an unincorporated part of Los Angeles County at the foot of the Hollywood Hills just to the west of downtown L.A., an eclectic mix of residents – including a large population of gays – voted in 1984 to incorporate and become the City of West Hollywood. Today, it is known for its hotels, restaurants, nightlife and shopping. In addition, a third of the approximately 40,000 residents identify as gay, one of the highest concentrations in the county.During my stay, I hopped between three of the city's hotels. First, I stayed at the Ramada Plaza on Santa Monica Boulevard, one of the gayest streets in the world, running directly through the heart of West Hollywood's gay district. The hotel is moderately priced and all of the rooms were recently updated in a colorful, art deco style. ...
Divine Desert: What Santa Fe lacks in revelry, it more than makes up for with art, history, culture and calm

Travel:Like a fine cheese or wine, some things simply get better with age. This certainly seems to be the case for Santa Fe, as the capital of New Mexico celebrates its 400th anniversary. Santa Fe (Photo by Ivan Astar)Throughout its history, Santa Fe has been a destination for those on a quest -- from Spanish conquistadores seeking new land to artists seeking inspiration to gays seeking acceptance. Today, Santa Fe trails only San Francisco among U.S. metro areas in the percentage of households headed by same-sex partners. As such, I found it to be a welcoming city with much to offer. One of the first things you notice when visiting Santa Fe is the adobe -- it's everywhere. The Palace of the Governors is a prime example of the distinctive architecture. Located along the northern edge of the city's historic, central Santa Fe Plaza, it's the oldest public building in the United States. It serves as a state history museum and visitors can find Native-American artisans selling their wares daily under the building's portal. ...

Travel:When you close your eyes at work for a wee respite of daydreaming this season, chances are you're more likely to envision yourself soaking up rays on a tropical beach than in some noisy metropolis. But if the metropolis is Amsterdam, the palm trees have met their match. AmsterdamThough possibly the most gay-friendly destination in the world, the fact that the Dutch employ the euro to pay the bills makes the city a pricier adventure than most non-European destinations. That's why any time between now and the late-March turn to the spring travel season is optimal for recession-weary voyagers. Prices in the off-season are downright reasonable. You may miss out on fields of tulips, but nobody's really going to the Amsterdam for the weather.Further, even with off-season prices, it's not as though Amsterdam really slows down. The city may not be bursting with tourists, but there are enough European weekenders to keep Amsterdam bustling year round. ...
