In a world where people struggle to have children, one American couple decides to "un-adopt" their young Korean son because they have a newborn at home. After an internet chat room search for the right family, the father "re-homes" the boy with a lesbian couple, where one half is desperate for a child and the other half is fighting for her career. As the boy -- who thinks he’s a wolf, but is really a puppet -- adjusts to his new life, he forms bonds with the unlikeliest of culprits while the rest of the adults squabble about what is "best for the child." "Wolf Play" is a messy, funny, and moving theatrical experience that grapples with where family allegiance lies. See "Wolf Play" at Artists Repertory Theatre. [less-]

The "Huffington Post" called it “A heart-tugging, emotionally rewarding evening.” A celebration of the simple beauty of being human, "Tiny Beautiful Things" is based on Cheryl Strayed’s ("Wild") journey as the beloved anonymous advice columnist for "Dear Sugar". Over the years, thousands of people turned to Sugar for words of wisdom, compassion and hope. At first unsure of herself, Sugar finds a way to weave her own life experiences together with the deep yearning and heartrending questions from her readers. This funny and deeply touching exploration of resilience at Portland Center Stage at The Armory was brilliantly adapted for the stage by Nia Vardalos, the Academy Award-nominated writer of "My Big Fat Greek Wedding". Featuring a fast-paced plot full of mistaken identities, jilted lovers and escalating topsy-turvydom, "Taking Steps" has all the trappings of a classic British farce. Set in a dilapidated, reputedly haunted three-story country house (cleverly played out on a one-story stage), the comedy centers around Elizabeth, who plans on leaving her husband, Roland, and Elizabeth's brother Mark, who had been recently jilted at the altar by his fiancée, Kitty. As the frenetic evening progresses, Elizabeth and Kitty's farewell notes get mixed up and misinterpreted, the estate's owner is mistaken for a burglar and a local legend has a none-too-bright local solicitor thinking he's in bed with a ghost seductress. "Taking Steps" first premiered in 1979 at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough, and now you can experience all the farcical fun at Lakewood Center for the Arts in Lake Oswego. [less-]

Based upon the life of Joseph Merrick, a man so physically deformed that he became known as "The Elephant Man". With very few options open to him, Merrick is forced to display himself to the public in traveling sideshows. Eventually, however, he finds himself alone and destitute in London. Due to the kindness of one Dr. Frederick Treves, Merrick is soon admitted into the London Hospital for care and observation. Treves becomes determined to help Merrick lead a normal life, and Merrick soon becomes the toast of society. In the end, however, he finds that normality isn’t something he can achieve, or that he even necessarily wants. This production at Twilight Theater Company in Portland calls for no prosthetic makeup on the actor portraying Merrick; the actor portrays Merrick's deformity through physicality, letting the audience imagine Merrick's appearance. "Red Hot Patriot" is the story of the unsinkable Molly Ivins, the famously brassy newspaper columnist and best-selling author. A true Texas original, Ivins was a sharp-tongued wit who skewered the political establishment and the "good ol' boys" with her unforgettable humor and wisdom. Written by twin sisters, themselves longtime journalists, the play celebrates Ivins' courage and tenacity -- even when a complacent America wasn't listening. Meg Chamberlain is all smarts and sass as the red headed firebrand, recounting her political rants and personal reflections with a liberal dose of piss and vinegar. This production, at the Chapel Theater in Milwaukie, captures the spunky reporter's indomitable character by weaving personal anecdotes with her colorful take on national politics. [less-]
