Mel Brooks' outrageous, Tony-winning musical comedy "The Producers" tells the story of broke Broadway producer Max Bialystock and his accountant, Leo Bloom. Desperate for cash, these two schemers hatch a plan to produce a musical that's sure to be a failure so they can cut and run with the unspent production money. But when their "big flop" turns out to be a huge hit, they're in trouble. Based on the classic 1968 film, and featuring the hilariously tasteless show-within-a-show "Springtime for Hitler", "The Producers" skewers the over-the-top absurdities of musical theater while delivering a heartfelt tale of the true friendship that develops between two would-be con artists. Experience the Seattle Musical Theatre production of the musical favorite. [less-]

A powerful exploration of African-American history and identity, "Crowns" follows six black women in the South whose stories of love, loss and sisterhood are woven into the hats that crown their heads and the dynamic gospel songs that speak their truth. The story centers on Chicago-born Yolanda, who is sent down South after the death of her brother in Brooklyn. There, she finds strength in the tales of the wise women who surround her -- and in the rituals connected to their dazzling headwear. Penned by award-winning playwright and actress Regina Taylor ("I'll Fly Away, The Unit"), "Crowns" delivers a good time (and fierce "hattitude") at Seattle's Jewell Mainstage at Taproot Theatre Company. "The Grey Golem" takes shots at the cliches of heroism, the culture of comic fandom and even comics legends like Frank Miller and Alan Moore. This new play is a hilarious hit job on the American comic book industry and the superhero industrial complex. Years ago, the world's greatest superhero, the Grey Golem, went into retirement believing he had finally rid his city of crime, once and for all. But when his butler is mysteriously murdered, the Golem once again dons the cape and cowl only to discover that the job of a superhero is much more complicated than he remembers. Inspired by the darker corners of the Batman mythos and the seemingly omnipresent superhero movies of current pop culture, "The Grey Golem" is truly a comedy of our time. This world premiere production flies into action at The Ballard Underground in Seattle. [less-]

Oregon Shakespeare Festival favorite Howie Seago directs the Sound Theatre Company in "ASL Midsummer Night's Dream" -- a bilingual production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" in both spoken English and American Sign Language. Quite possibly Shakespeare's most beloved romantic comedy, "A Midsummer Night's Dream" has everything you'd expect in a modern-day rom-com -- lover triangles, mistaken identities, a feel-good wedding finale -- all turned up to 11, thanks to some playful magic from Puck and some mischievous woodland sprites. The Bard put some of his most dazzling dramatic poetry at the service of this teasing, glittering, hilarious and amazingly inventive play, whose seriousness is only fleetingly glimpsed beneath its dreamlike surface. Come to 12th Ave Arts in Seattle for this inclusive production that's a delight for all audiences. [less-]

Shakespeare's rowdy screwball comedy, "The Taming of the Shrew", follows the treacherous road to romance for a strong-willed pair of lovers who've met their ultimate match in each other. Until older sister Kate has a husband, sweet younger sister, Bianca, cannot marry -- but feisty, fiery-tongued Kate rejects every suitor who tries to woo her. Along comes Petruchio, who's more than willing to take a chance at Kate's sizable dowry. His efforts to "tame" her remain a controversial aspect of this tale, reminding us of the expected gender roles of 400 years past, and how far we have and haven't come since. [less-]

A brand-new musical with a mythological twist, "String" is a fun and fresh fable about fate, love and the wonders of chocolate. Martin McDonagh echoes the works of Stoppard, Kafka, and the Brothers Grimm in this New York Drama Critics' Circle and Olivier Award winning script. "The Pillowman" is a viciously funny and seriously disturbing tale of Katurian, a fiction writer in an unnamed totalitarian state. Katurian and his brother Michael are brought in for questioning by two bulldog detectives, Tupolski and Ariel, when the content of his short stories -- which involve disturbingly gruesome tales -- begin to resemble real-life murders. "The Pillowman" weaves between reality and storytelling; the result is an urgent work of theatrical bravura and an unflinching examination of the very nature and purpose of art. Don't miss "The Pillowman" at Tacoma Little Theatre. [less-]

Housed in a 1909 brick building on the Seattle waterfront, Highway 99 Blues Club and Restaurant is inspired by the juke joints of the American South and the neighborhood blues clubs of Chicago. Dubbing themselves "the West Coast Home of the Blues," the venue fully embraces the culture and music. On stage, you'll see regional and national touring artists cranking out everything from zydeco to honky-tonk to roots and Americana. Meanwhile, the venue itself is studded with "old timey" touches like a 34-foot bar made from antique doors and blue velvet benches collected from an old Masonic Temple. The walls are covered with photos snapped by some of the country's best blues photographers. And to round out the juke joint experience, the kitchen pumps out Southern-style comfort food -- think jambalaya and chicken gumbo -- while the bar whips up cocktails named for blues legends like Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters.
