Phil Hartnoll

On April 19, I was fortunate to interview Phil Hartnoll of the pioneering electronica band, Orbital. He was in his home in England, me in my office. (The painting behind him was done by his wife, and he was bathed in an odd purple glow, but no matter.) The half-hour interview was recorded via the wonders of Skype and, though the video really isn't of great quality, we thought it engaging enough to run in full, as Orbital has just released its first album in 8 years and followed it with three incredibly arresting, slightly unsettling videos.

So we give you what will become the first in an ongoing series with musicians: A Soundwaves Skype Chat, Uncut and Unedited (mostly).

Electric Guest Website

Successfully put all the pieces into place on the "puzzle" at the Electric Guest website and you'll get some exclusive streams -- a pleasantly strummed acoustic version of "This Head I Hold" (I prefer the driving album version) and, better still, "Jenny," a lovely song that, for some reason didn't make it to the album (it should have -- it's quite good).

Read Doug Rule's review of Electric Guest's debut Mondo here.

Kylie Minogue released the video for "Time Bomb," her latest dance music single.

The Australian singer and actress turns 44 on May 28, and she is celebrating "her 25th year in music," according to her official website.

In the video, Minogue looks as fit and sexy as ever as she walks around the streets of London. The song's lyrics, though, implore the listener to enjoy life now because "Time is ticking oh so fast / The sand is running quick right through our hands." In the chorus she asks, "Do you wanna dance like it was the last dance? / We're on a time bomb / It might not last long / So let's just do it right now. Do it, come on!"

The new song is available on iTunes, and a "Best of Kylie" CD/DVD combo is available for purchase from Amazon soon, which will feature 21 of her biggest hits. "Time Bomb" is not listed as one of those tracks.

Kylie Minogue is set to appear as Tara in the teenage lesbian-themed movie, "Jack and Diane." She also plays a "suicidal stewardess" in the surreal French film, "Holy Motors," according to the New York Times. The latter film premiered at Cannes last week.

Donna Summer's everlasting dance

Donna summer

When I first came out as a college student in the mid-‘90s, the gay dance club in Columbia, Mo., would end the night with Donna Summer’s “Last Dance.”

And why should it be otherwise?

“Yes, it’s my last chance, for romance, tonight,” Summer sang, as the queens sang right along with her – and sized each other up one last time, looking for “my Mr. Right,” at least for the night.

Well, sadly, it’s time to turn up all the lights in clubland: The Queen of Disco and Dance died today in Key West, Fla., of breast and lung cancer, according to the Associated Press.

Summer, born LaDonna Adrian Gaines only 63 years ago, may not have had many hits in the past two decades. But the gospel-reared pop belter’s place as a reigning and enduring diva in clubland – and the gay community in general – was established long, long ago.

If largely unfounded and certainly outdated claims of anti-gay comments couldn’t dethrone her, fortunately, neither can death.

“So many years ago, on the radio, she crept into your soul, and loved to love you, oh-oh,” Donna Summer sang, subtly referencing a couple of her biggest hits, on “The Queen Is Back.” That appealing 2008 track came from her album Crayons, her first all-new set in 17 years – which was better and fresher than I had expected, at least. And her voice was as supple and glorious as it had ever been.

Just think about all those hits that were the soundtrack to gay nights out: “On The Radio,” “Bad Girls,” “Hot Stuff,” “Love To Love You Baby,” “Heaven Knows,” that wondrous duet with another gay diva Barbra Streisand, “No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)” – and that was just a sampling of her biggest hits from a prolific run in the ‘70s. “She Works Hard For The Money” was one of a few post-disco ‘80s hits, and then every few years from the ‘90s on Summer would score a club hit, from “I Will Go With You (Con Te Partiro)” to “You’re So Beautiful” to “Power of Love.” (What's your favorite Donna Summer hit? Take our poll and tell us what you think?)

Over the past decade everyone from Madonna to Beyonce to Jennifer Lopez has sampled or covered Summer’s hits to fashion hits of their own. And Summer’s most enduring hit, the orgasmic “I Feel Love,” has still not left DJ playlists. DJs value the song, co-produced with Giorgio Moroder, and its many remixed versions, as a secret weapon: It just may be the best, most quintessential dance song ever, one that will rejuvenate any fading dance floor. The song never gets old no matter how many thousands of times you’ve heard it.

Especially over the past decade Summer became an active performer at AIDS-related benefits and gay dance events, and donated to the fight against AIDS. Two years ago, she told me before a concert at Wolf Trap that she was preparing to record both a new dance album and a standards set.

It’s not clear how close to completion she was on either set at the time of her death.

In that same interview, she also said that her hit “Last Dance” was her personal favorite. “That song is tied in with a lot of personal memories. And there's something magical about [it], honest and truly,” she told me. “I used to see Judy Garland, and she would be in her light and in her moment. And there are times in that song when I have a sense of that [same] feeling. Everybody knows the lyrics, they're singing it back to me. There's a real connection in that song. That's beautiful.”

Heaven knows, it’s true.

NickiMinaj1

Nicki Minaj has released the video for "Right By My Side," featuring Chris Brown. It's the latest single off her new album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded.

Soundwaves says...

Song: Worth listening to, until the next song that sounds exactly like it trots along.

Video: Uh, really? You think they could have made it a little less literal and cliche?

The New York City-based The Dig will release their new album, Midnight Flowers, on May 29. We've got a sample of their first single, the soothing, trippy "I Already Forgot Everything You Said." It's really a lovely song.

Hands

Hands recently released its new EP -- Massive Context -- and to promote, they hiked up into the Santa Monica mountains and performed "an intimate" one-take performance of their song "Forced Fascination." Stick with it for a moment or two, as it actually gets pretty good.

Leah Labelle

The official video for Leah LaBelle's soul-saturated "Sexify" is reportedly coming soon. In the meantime, Epic has released this "lyric video," which is kind of fun to watch, more or less, in a wordy kind of way. Look, at least there are lyrics other than "Oh, oh, baby" and "Uh, uh, baby." And where else are you going to read "dancing in my bra and panties" on your computer screen? (Don't answer that.) All in all, not a bad way to spend three and a half minutes. In wordy kind of way, of course.

The album drops on iTunes May 15.

Cher Lloyd's video for "Want U Back" is as confectionary as pop gets. We love, love, love it. And by love, we mean we can't stop watching it.

“Want U Back” will be available for download on iTunes and other digital services on May 22. Here's the vid.

They just released their second installment of a two-part Collapse of History EP on Dim Mak Records. The new video appeared this week. It was shot in a mental institute in the suburbs of Paris.

JD Samson

Samson & MEN played at the May Day march on May 1, 2012 in New York City. The video quality is a bit sketchy, but the sound is quite good, as they perform "Boom Boom Boom" and "Make Him Pay."

At the March, Sampson made the following speech:

We are a protest band. We are here in solidarity as feminists, queers, and part of the greater 99 percent. We are here to support immigrant rights, workers rights, AND the occupy movement. But this is not a day to divide, this is a day to stand as one. We will not only protest, but make a collective promise that we will never ever back down. That we will never weaken our intelligent force, and that we will only get stronger. We must remain simultaneously angry yet hopeful and continue our constant support for each other. And most importantly give gratitude to this incredible crowd. We can not do this alone. We need this choir. We need this team."

Chiddy Bang

Chiddy Bang premiered their newest video today. "Mind Your Manners" follows their single "Ray Charles," and is another track off their debut BREAKFAST. The upbeat track samples the buzzed about Swedish group, Icona Pop!. It's an engaging track that features a man in a wolf's head.
