DJ & remixer Peter Rauhofer headlines Cherry's main event, Saturday at 9:30 Club
”You get completely put in a different time zone when you hear them. It’s like smelling a perfume, you get reminded of a certain kind of situation,” Peter Rauhofer says, describing the general effect of listening to your favorite dance remixes.
Rauhofer is probably contemporary dance music’s most popular remixer, and the New York-based Austrian won a Grammy for his skills in 2000. During an interview from his studio in Vienna, he cites his remix of Christina Aguilera’s ”Beautiful” and Depeche Mode’s ”It’s No Good” as the two he’s most proud of.

Rauhofer is quickly becoming one of the most popular DJs on the gay circuit scene, having just spun at New York’s legendary Black Party and at Miami’s venerated White Party last November, among others. This Saturday he debuts at Cherry for the Saturday Night Main Event at the 9:30 Club.
Still, the former multi-year resident at New York’s famed Roxy Nightclub doesn’t consider himself a typical circuit DJ. ”I’m not the tribal house DJ or the vocal-only DJ,” Rauhofer says.
”I always try to satisfy as many people as possible in a club,” he says. “I don’t think it’s possible with one sound. My sets always have a little bit of everything.”
But his sound is built around an edgy, underground, old-school sensibility. ”I think I’ve gotten more experimental and harder throughout the years,” Rauhofer says. He rarely plays the over-the-top, diva-driven melodic work with which he made his name ten years ago as the lead man behind Club 69.
Not too edgy, mind you. ”The trend in clubs, especially throughout the last [few] years was harder, harder, harder, which is also not good all the time, he says. ”The soul shouldn’t get lost at the end of the day.”
