Lambda Sci-Fi

GLBT science fiction fans meet-up for much more

Star Trek, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica — I’m just not a fan. But that didn’t keep me from engaging in scintillating conversation with members of the Lambda Sci-Fi group . I joined the gang during their monthly potluck social last Sunday in the Dupont-area apartment of a member, and learned quickly that ”sci-fi” in this instance goes way beyond the battlestars and galaxies up above.

The group also gets into horror, superhero films and spoofs of the genre. That is, of course, with the exception of one superhero movie that I was warned upon entering to never ever discuss: Catwoman, starring Halle Berry. Like the rest of the world, we were all in agreement that that film was an insult to all things superhero and that we’d just be better off pretending it doesn’t even exist.

Despite my lack of interest in traditional sci-fi, I did earn a round of applause from this jovial crowd when I mentioned that Shawn of the Dead is one of my favorite movies. Other topics included television shows such as Lost, and why some Lambda Sci-Fi members hate it, while others continue to tune in.

We also talked about an upcoming event that some members planned to attend: ”Costume-Con 27” in Baltimore. Because I met the group the day after their trip to Gallery Place to watch Star Trek, everyone was still high from the experience of the rebooted franchise. We wrapped up the social by watching a recording of Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto on Saturday Night Live‘s ”Weekend Update.”
