Gay marriage in Portugal! Sixth nation in Europe to grant same-sex marriage rights

”Given that fact [Portugal’s current economic crisis], I feel I should not contribute to a pointless extension of this debate, which would only serve to deepen the divisions between the Portuguese and divert the attention of politicians away from the grave problems affecting us.”

Thankfully, Pope (Ratzinger) Benedict‘s attempt to interfere in the process has failed. This past weekend, Ratzinger visited Portugal, a European nation which is about 90% Catholic, yet most of the population reportedly does not actively practice the religion. He called abortion rights, gay marriage rights, and any form of relationship that was not man-woman in marriage ”insidious and dangerous threats to the common good.”
