Oklahoma’s first transgender candidate takes on the notorious Sally Kern

“I fully anticipate someone will try to make it an issue…but I want to be a representative, and I don’t want to let the fact that I went through that part of my life affect that I am right for the job.”

Brittany Novotny, a Democratic candidate for the Oklahoma state legislature seat currently held by Rep. Sally Kern (R). Novotny is the first “known” transgender candidate for office in the state. Kern achieved national notoriety for a 2008 speech, posted on YouTube, in which she claimed, “Studies show no society that has totally embraced homosexuality has lasted more than a few decades.” (New York Times)
