CFNCR recognizes Metro TeenAIDS's Christopher Barnhill

Inspiring role models may be hard to find, but the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region (CFNCR) annually recognizes individuals considered ”unsung heroes” with the Linowes Leadership Award.

Established in 1997 in honor of former CFNCR chair and philanthropist R. Robert Linowes, the Linowes Leadership Award seeks to recognize individuals who would normally go unnoticed for their hard work as community leaders in the Washington area. This year, the organization is honoring HIV-positive activist Christopher Barnhill.

”It feels really amazing to be awarded for the work that I do in the community,” says Barnhill, education and curriculum coordinator for Metro TeenAIDS. Throughout the metro area, Barnhill devotes his time to eliminating HIV/AIDS transmission and creating a community that engages and supports HIV-positive youth.

”I never got into this field to be recognized or honored,” says Barnhill. ”I got into this field to really make a difference in people’s lives.”

In addition to the award, each of this year’s four recipients will receive an unrestricted $2,000 direct grant, as well as an additional $3,000 for a local nonprofit community organization of his or her choice. The awards will be presented at the 2010 Celebration of Civic Spirit on Thursday, Dec. 9.

The 2010 Celebration of Civic Spirit will be held at The Ritz-Carlton, Washington D.C., 1150 22nd St. NW, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. To purchase tickets, $250, call 202-955-5890 or visit cfncr.org.
