Illinois legalizes civil unions for lesbian, gay couples [video]

”I think this is something really, really special, because we believe in civil rights and we believe in civil unions. And that’s what we’re going to do today.”

Statement from Illinois Gov. Patrick Quinn (D) who signed a civil unions law on Monday. State Senator David Koehler said he had signed on as sponsor of the bill because he has a gay daughter, adding that he saw the issue through her eyes. He asked himself why, with three daughters, would the two have rights different from the third. (Governor Quinn / YouTube)
