Focus on the Family CEO: Gay marriage opposition lost due to young generation’s support

Jim Daly of the anti-gay religious organization Focus on the Family was recently interviewed by the Christian publication World Magazine. In a question-and-answer session that primarily focused on fighting abortions with ultrasound images, Daly was asked if conservative Christians were “winning” against same-sex marriage among the younger generation. He responded:

“We’re losing on that one, especially among the 20- and 30-somethings … under 40 is 65 to 70 percent of them favor same-sex marriage. So, I don’t know if that’s going to change with a little more age—demographers would say probably not. We probably have lost that. I don’t want to be extremist here, but I think we need to start calculating where we’re at in the culture.”

Daly then delved into sour grapes by complaining about the agenda of “elite culture” being odd in comparison to “the people” in 31 states who voted against gay marriage. He then pondered whether God is “so upset” by Christians “mishandling” marriage that “He is handing us over to this polygamy and same-sex situation” to drive Christians away from no-fault divorce. He also said that state recogonition of marriage is “worthless,” yet earlier had claimed that Christians needed to be integrated with public policy and that government had a key interest in keeping families together through marriage.
