Stonewall Kickball announces $3,472 for The Center with past season's ''Drag Ball''

Drag queens from Nellie’s Sports Bar and Freddie’s Beach Bar joined Stonewall Kickball players at Stead Park for a special Drag Ball fundraising game during Capital Pride season, on June 5, kicking off their heels and playing ball.

Martin Espinoza, co-founder of Stonewall Kickball, said the organization raised $3,472 for The Center, D.C.’s LGBT community center.

”The money came from the $5 entrance fee, but then each team was asked to sponsor or donate through the individual players,” he says. ”We also took in local business donations on sponsorship levels.”

”We always wanted to do that event,” he says, adding that it will return annually. Espinoza says the league is considering launching its spring 2012 season with the Drag Ball.

”The reason we started the league in 2010 was to create a fun environment for people to get together and play kickball, but to also do something for the community. That’s why we chose The D.C. Center.”
