In short order, “FagDay” Twitter trending topic replaced with “Gaga Is Our Valentine”

This morning, for a few minutes at least, the Valentine’s Day messages on Twitter included one that didn’t sit too well with LGBT equality advocates. The “#FagDay” hashtag was trending as the No. 3 most popular trend on Twitter worldwide at 9:15 a.m.

Some users of the social media service were offended:

Gaga.pngUPDATE: Some are claiming that the “#FagDay” hashtag was relating to the British slang for cigarettes.

The only reference Metro Weekly can find to “Fag” Day is this 1917 World War I poster, which denotes the day as May 29, 1917. This image comes from the Imperial War Museums in London, but the same poster also can be found (and is referenced) elsewhere.

Is there some effort afoot to celebrate “Fag” Day again that led to the trending topic this morning?
