Montgomery College To Host LGBT Consortium
Event will promote greater acceptance of LGBT students and staff on college campuses
Montgomery College’s Takoma/Silver Spring campus will host a daylong consortium Friday, June 22, aimed at determining best practices for promoting LGBT acceptance on college campuses.
The event, titled ”How Do You Do It?” will feature several speakers, including Brad Stewart, the campus provost; Michelle Scott, the college’s equity and diversity officer; and keynote speaker Luke S. Jensen, director of the LGBT Equity Center at the University of Maryland.
Following the speeches, attendees – faculty, staff, administrators, students and activists – will participate in breakout sessions, sharing experiences and strategies related to fostering accepting environments for LGBT students and employees.
According to MC Pride and Allies, the on-campus LGBT group hosting the event, topics will include institutional supports, professional development programs and advocacy work into the classroom.
”There are so many of us – students, faculty, staff, administrators and community members – who are doing wonderful work, but also so many who do not know where to begin in creating LGBTQ-welcoming campuses,” said Rita Kranidis, a Montgomery College English professor and faculty advisor for MC Pride and Allies. ”This consortium gives us the opportunity to talk with one another and support one another.”
The ”How Do You Do It?” LGBT consortium is Friday, June 22, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the Health Sciences Building on campus, 7600 Takoma Ave., Takoma Park, Md., Room 222. The event, which includes parking and refreshments, is free. Registration is requested by June 15 by emailing rita.kranidis@montgomerycollege.edu.
