New Zealand becomes 13th nation to legalize same-sex marriage

“In our society, the meaning of marriage is universal — it’s a declaration of love and commitment to a special person. Nothing could make me more proud to be a New Zealander than passing this bill.”

New Zealand Member of Parliament Louisa Wall, sponsor of a bill legalizing same-sex marriage in New Zealand. It’s the 13th nation in the world to recognize same-sex marriage as legal. Once the vote count was announced, the room erupted with a spontaneous singing of the New Zealand love song, “Pokarekare Ana,” in the native Maori language, filling the nation’s House of Representatives with an extraordinary sense of warmth.
