Costa Rica may be known for its lush rainforests, pristine beaches, and the ever-present philosophy of pura vida -- the âpure lifeâ -- but itâs also one of the most progressive LGBTQ destinations in Central America. Since legalizing same-sex marriage in 2020, the country has nurtured a growing queer community in both urban and coastal regions, creating a welcoming atmosphere that celebrates diversity amid its natural beauty.
The country's path toward LGBTQ equality has been steady and meaningful. In 2020, it became the first nation in Central America to legalize same-sex marriage, a landmark decision fueled by years of advocacy and public debate. Since then, the government has strengthened anti-discrimination protections, expanded support for trans rights, and woven LGBTQ education and awareness into public policy.
Philadelphia is extending its reputation as the âCity of Brotherly Loveâ with plans to open one of the nationâs first LGBTQ visitors' centers.
Slated to open in January 2026, the Philly Pride Visitors Center will debut in the cityâs LGBTQ neighborhood of Midtown Village, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the nationâs founding.
âWe donât just welcome diversity -- we celebrate it,â said Kathryn Ott Lovell, president and CEO of the Philadelphia Visitor Center Corporation. âOur hope is that the Philly Pride Visitors Center becomes a place where LGBTQ+ visitors feel they belong from the moment they arrive.â
Two 20-year-old men have been accused of plotting a deadly terrorist attack in suburban Detroit, allegedly targeting several LGBTQ bars after purchasing high-powered weapons, stockpiling ammunition, and practicing at local gun ranges.
According to an FBI affidavit, Mohmed Ali and Majed Mahmoud, both 20 and from Dearborn, allegedly conspired with at least five unnamed individuals and a minor -- identified as "Person 1" -- to carry out an ISIS-inspired shooting attack on Halloween night. Prosecutors say Ali and Person 1 were to execute the assault while the others planned to travel to Syria to join Islamic State forces.
