WWE proud to support gay wrestler Darren Young

Harvey Fierstein happy and humbled by wrestler's tweet

“On TMZ this morning, WWE Superstar Darren Young (Fred Rosser) revealed to the WWE Universe that he is gay. WWE is proud of Darren Young for being open about his sexuality, and we will continue to support him as a WWE Superstar. Today, in fact, Darren will be participating in one of our Be A STAR anti-bullying rallies in Los Angeles to teach children how to create positive environments for everyone regardless of age, race, religion or sexual orientation.”

Statement issued by World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc. on the public coming out of Darren Young (aka Fred Rosser) in an impromptu interview with a TMZ reporter.

Young used Twitter this afternoon to send out a positive follow-up to his fans — a quote from gay actor, playwright and activst Harvey Fierstein:

Fierstein responded to a question about it from Last Word, saying:

Young is reported to be the first openly gay member of the WWE franchise. However, another wrestler, the late Chris Kanyon, courted controversy by declaring he was gay in 2004. Then there is WWE Hall of Famer Pat Patterson; and in 2002, wrestlers Billy & Chuck pretended to have a gay commitment ceremony.
