South Carolina Republicans disown candidate who called gay couples “Gremlins”

“Most people learned in kindergarten not to call other people names.”

–South Carolina State GOP Chairman Matt Moore, speaking with The State newspaper. Moore was speaking about Republican Party candidate Anthony Culler, standing in South Carolina’s 6th Congressional District, who took to his Facebook page to write a tirade against same-sex marriage and same-sex couples. “Same-sex ‘marriage’ is a pestilence that has descended on our society, against our will,” he wrote. Culler continued, referencing 1984 classic Gremlins, stating, “Same-sex couples that seek to destroy our way of life and the institution of marriage are NOT cute and cuddly but rather… Gremlins that will only destroy our way of life.”

“Our party believes in the conservative definition of marriage, but we also believe in loving our neighbors and treating them with respect,” Moore told The State. “Mr. Culler’s desperate attention seeking in no way represents the good, decent South Carolinians across our state.” Moore added that the Republican Party will no longer support Culler’s House campaign. Culler, seemingly in need of a PR person, posted a follow-up video to his Facebook page in which he clarified his comments: “They’re Gremlins. They’re these creatures that are so destructive.”
